Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare



Chain of Gold is the first book of The Last Hour series written by the outstanding author Cassandra Clare. I recently read this book during the pandemic and lets just say it was phenomenal! Here's what you need to know when you start to read this book: First, this book takes place several years later after The Infernal Device series (Clockwork Angel, Clockwork Prince, and Clockwork Princess). Second, this story is based on the next Shadowhunter generation which includes Will Herondale and Tessa Gray's children, James and Lucy Herondale, and other Shadowhunter families in the past series. Not only are we being introduced to new characters and the dynamics of their families, but we learn that demons haven't made their appearance in a while. This lack of appearance has caused Shadowhunters to ease up on their guard and duties which isn't a good thing, because suddenly a surge of demons appears out of nowhere. Many of the Shadowhunters are dumbfounded as how the demons appeared on a sunny day since the sunlight kills them easily. A mystery to solve and people to save from the mysterious demon poison that slowly kills those infected.  
Also, in the series readers will learn about James and Lucy's unique abilities that have been inherited through their mother's half Warlock and Shadowhunter blood. Not only are their abilities unusual for a Shadowhunter but it will save them multiple times in this book. I can only imagine how their powers will grow in next two books in this series, and with any luck they'll have their friends to help them.

The Red Scrolls of Magic

This lovely book is another great addition to the Shadowhunter book series. Cassandra Clare and co-writer Wesley Chu spin a unique tale of romance and adventure between Magnus Bane (Warlock) and Alec Lightwood (Shadowhunter). Yes, that's right, we have a same-sex relationship between a Shadowhunter and Warlock. After surviving an epic battle against Valentine Morgenstern, and then Alec "coming out" in front of the Clave by kissing Magnus, it's time for some relaxation. What better way then to go on a cross country European trip with your boyfriend?
